NYE
right after my super-enjoyable 21st birthday celebrations at MOS, which i came home only at 4am... i only had time to catch about 6hrs of winks before my due to catch a ferry to Batam on 31st Dec for a NYE celebration organized by Tay's family.
when we arrived at Batam, it was raining heavily so we ended up playing X-box and taking naps.
thankfully by the time we wanted to BBQ our beef steaks, chicken fillets and other goodies,
the rain has stopped. Tay's Mum's steak was deliciously marinated with ginger juice and other condiments. there was cold beer and fresh salads. we also lit tea-candles and mosquito coils. that nite was indeed fun, catching up on old times and sharing experiences on overseas education.. most of those present completed their degree in Boston. Jack (an A&E doctor at TTSH) was teaching us how to feel for diarrhea symptoms using anal inspection by inserting a gloved finger up the anus to check for watery stool marks over dinner... lucky we had beer to keep us from throwing up =P later that nite, it was back to the poker table where we played 'zhong-jian' and Jack lost to the banker's pot! that was hilarious!
the 2nd day started of with Paul barging in at 8am to chat with Tay's Dad about finance market while some of us were still asleep in the sitting room. somehow i managed to fall back to sleep despite the noise... Kok Siong and Jack went canoeing. after Jack beached the canoe, he strided back to the bungalow in a 100% Baywatch hunk fashion. that was a magnificent sight! (then of coz the rest of us were sniggering at him at the kitchen window). by noon, it started raining so we played mahjong and Scrabble. Jie Jun scored the highest. did i mention that she graduated with Law deg from Oxford? now we know.. she compiled the Oxford dictionary! Jack kept insisting that there's a word 'Qataric'. duh..
that evening, we went fishing for glass fish which was to be used as a bait for squids that nite. yes, Jack fed Twisties to the small 2-inch glass fish he caught.. Yi Jun and May being kind-hearted people released their catch once it was reeled.. hmm.. =/ Paul, Mike and i caught nothing. i swear that there's something jinxed about our rod. by 11pm, we were back at the jetty to fish for squids. this time we used artificial baits too. that was fun! to wait for the sotong to take the bait, and reel it in one swing. takes alot of skill to cast the rod as well. we saw 5 mullets too! Tay's Dad taught us alot. catch of the day: 10 squids and 1 eel. did i mention that Jack got squirted with ink by the squid when he reeled it in? =P there were plenty of stars that nite too! it was pretty refreshing experience to just lie on a bench at the jetty to admire the brilliant nite sky.. i suddenly felt very minute and was awed by God's almighty creation.
the 3rd day was just packing and cleaning up coz we had to catch the 2pm ferry.
all in all, it was a wonderful NYE. thanks lots once again to the Tay family and Sara for their hospitality and great company!
may God bless us with a fruitful 2006!
due to the over-eating of BBQ foods, chips and chcolates and a severe shortage of sleep,
Tay and i came down with a bad flu. cough and sorethroat was part of the package... =(
